You will start to notice some symptoms such as: Heavy coughing, mucus will start to form consistently, and respiratory problems such as difficulty breathing after walking short distances will be noticeable. Other than the common symptoms that you can notice, there are two main factors in how smoking will hurt your lungs. The first way is by the damage it will cause to the cilia and the alveoli. The cilia helps protect against infections by capturing the pollution that we intake as we breathe. As you continually smoke, the cilia starts to slowly be destroyed, making the lungs easily susceptible to infections and its repairing ability. This is very important to the lungs, as a healthy individual will be able to cough out the polluted air due to the function of the cilia. The second way is by the damage it significantly causes on the alveoli. The primary function of the alveoli is to help contain oxygen and release it as we breathe. A healthy pair of lungs is usually able to use its function properly by being able to stretch to take in the oxygen and then release the excess amount that is not needed. The smoke from cigarettes damages the alveoli by not allowing it to stretch as easily or contain as much oxygen. This in return will give you shortness of breath and cause eventual respiratory problems. If the cilia becomes destroyed after from smoking, this is what causes all the infections and health problems in your lungs. Since its main purpose is to protect the lungs, you become easily susceptible to lung cancer, chronic coughs and other lung health related issues. There is too much at stake for your own health and lungs to not give quitting smoking a real shot.
